Pray for Your Country!

In recent days, our nation has experienced heightened tensions and deep divisions, particularly evident through the riots in Los Angeles related to immigration enforcement and heated debates surrounding so-called sanctuary states and cities. As a first-generation immigrant myself, these issues strike close to my heart, reminding me of the importance of responding with empathy, compassion, and persistent prayers.
Tomorrow, President Trump’s birthday will be marked by military parades and national celebrations. Yet simultaneously, the day will also witness widespread demonstrations under the banner “No Kings Day,” vividly illustrating the sharp societal divides on issues like immigration policy, federal authority, state rights, and personal freedoms. Major cities, including Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Boston, Seattle, etc., have witnessed significant unrest, driven by frustration over recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids and the deployment of federal troops, disrupting local communities and leaving a profound impact on many lives.
In such challenging times, Christians are called to a higher standard. The Apostle Paul instructs us clearly: “First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way” (1 Timothy 2:1-2, ESV). Regardless of our political differences, we are commanded to sincerely pray for our leaders, communities, and nation, seeking God’s wisdom, justice, and peace.
Scripture further provides clear guidance on our attitudes toward foreigners and outsiders. The Old Testament instructs, “You shall treat the stranger who sojourns with you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.” (Leviticus 19:34). These words challenge us to transcend fear and prejudice, remembering our shared humanity and vulnerability, and encouraging genuine hospitality and compassion.
Jesus emphasizes this further by highlighting our responsibility toward compassion and hospitality: “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me” (Matthew 25:35). Christ calls us to recognize His presence in foreigners, immigrants, and marginalized individuals.
Additionally, Peter reminds believers of their true identity: “Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul.” (1 Peter 2:11). Understanding that our ultimate citizenship is in heaven should guide our earthly actions, inspiring humility, grace, and reconciliation amidst divisive rhetoric.
However, applying these biblical principles practically can be complex. Consider, for example, an uninvited guest in your home who causes disruption or damage—how should you respond? The answers are seldom straightforward. Such situations require divine wisdom and careful discernment.
As we face these tumultuous times, let us commit ourselves anew to prayer for our nation, leaders, and all impacted by these issues—both citizens and immigrants. May we strive to speak and act in ways that foster healing instead of harm, build bridges rather than walls, and promote unity over division. Through steadfast prayer and compassionate action, let us become ambassadors of God’s peace, reconciliation, and love in our fractured world. Let’s be the channel of blessings and bring glory to our Heavenly Father!
Finally, as Father’s Day approaches, let me encourage those brothers who have grown children: when your children honor you, use the opportunity to discuss these critical social justice issues. Ask them their thoughts on these social unrests. Guide them toward seeking God’s heart and wisdom. May God empower you to be the salt and light for His Glory!
