Culture Eats Strategy for Breakfast!!

This week I took a few vacation days to join several fellow pastors and elders at Serra Retreat Center in Malibu, CA: a 26-acre sanctuary nestled between the Santa Monica Mountains and the Pacific. Founded in 1942 under the patronage of Saint Junípero Serra, the Franciscan friars invite visitors to “come apart and rest a while” (Mk 6:31). Winding eucalyptus groves, ocean breezes, and simple guest rooms create a perfect backdrop for reflection. Our conference rooms look out across canyon vistas; meals are served family-style; and moments of silence help us hear God’s voice above the surf and in the stillness of the hills.

The theme of the retreat is building a formidable team. During one session, the speaker reminded us that even the best strategic plans can falter if culture isn’t aligned to support them—“culture eats strategy for breakfast.” Although often misattributed to Peter Drucker, the phrase first appeared on the wall of Ford Motor Company’s president in 2006. The point is this: no matter how sound your plans, they will fail if the shared values, beliefs, and everyday behaviors of your people don’t reinforce them. Culture—the invisible web of attitudes and habits that shape how we treat one another—ultimately determines whether any strategy lives or dies.

Why does this matter for CrossPoint Community Ministry? Because our dreams for growth must flow from a unifying culture. As we prayerfully define CPCM’s vision for the next three years, I have one guiding priority: Reconciling Generations. We’re called to bridge the natural divide between those who’ve faithfully served CPCM for decades and the young families and professionals just finding their footing here. How do we cultivate a culture that truly “eats” strategy and energizes every generation?

  1. Mentoring Circles
Pair seasoned members with emerging adults and young parents. Over coffee on the terrace, participants share stories of faith, lessons learned, and hopes for the future—reminding older saints of fresh perspectives and awakening in younger believers a deep sense of belonging.
  2. Shared Worship Teams
Experiment with intergenerational planning: let our youth choose praise songs while elders shape liturgical reflections. The result? A service that feels both rooted and renewed, as wisdom and creativity find a common rhythm.
  3. Joint Service Projects
Amid the pines, we dismantled an old fence and rebuilt it together—symbolic of our work in the body of Christ. Side-by-side labor cultivates humility, trust, and conversation; it’s culture in action, not just theory.
  4. Prayer Partnerships
Following Serra’s admonition to “always go forward, never turn back,” we paired prayer partners so young professionals could bring fresh zeal, and older members could intercede with seasoned faith. Praying across generations enriches both the content and confidence of our petitions.

Is this doable? It depends on whether we’re willing to invest our time and energy in the next generation. Instead of juggling multiple visions, focusing on one achievable goal may be more realistic. What are your thoughts?
