Training for a Crown That Lasts

The world’s eyes turned to Mexico City today as the FIFA World Cup 2026 officially kicked off in a blaze of color, sound, and celebration. The opening ceremony erupted with fire and light around the towering World Cup trophy, a vivid reminder of the glory that 48 nations are now pursuing. Hours later, the tournament delivered its first storyline: Mexico’s 2–0 victory over South Africa, celebrated with joy and unity before a roaring crowd.

Moments like these stir something deep in the human spirit. Athletes train for years—sometimes decades—for a chance at a trophy that only one team will lift. Their discipline, sacrifice, and focus inspire millions. Yet Scripture gently redirects our gaze to a greater pursuit.

Paul writes, “Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training… They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.” (1 Corinthians 9:25)

The World Cup reminds us that earthly glory is real—but temporary. The cheers fade. The medals tarnish. The stadium lights eventually go dark. But the crown Christ offers His people is eternal, unfading, and given not to the strongest or fastest, but to the faithful.

And for those of us here in New England, the excitement comes close to home: Boston’s Gillette Stadium hosts its first match Saturday at 9 PM — a massive showdown between Haiti and Scotland. As the nations compete on the world’s biggest stage, may we be reminded of the race set before us. Let the discipline of these athletes stir in us a renewed desire to train our hearts, fix our eyes on Jesus, and pursue the crown that truly lasts.

So, what do you train for?
