Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
(The following is adapted from Spurgeon’s “Morning and Evening: Oct. 21 AM” )
“The love of Christ controls us” – 2 Corinthians 5:14
How much do you owe our Lord? Has he ever done anything for you? Has he forgiven your sins? Has he covered you with a robe of righteousness? Has he set your feet upon a rock? Has he established your going out? Has he prepared you for heaven? Has he written your name in his book of life? Has he given you countless blessings? Has he laid up for you stores of mercy? Then do something for Jesus that is worthy of his love.
Don’t merely say that you love Jesus. How will you feel when your Master comes, if you have to confess that you did nothing for him, but you withheld your love, like a stagnant pond, neither letting your love flow to the poor whom He loves or flow to do the work he has given you to do. Get rid of such a “love!”… Who would accept a love so weak that it doesn’t motivate you to do a single deed of self-denial, of generosity, of heroism, or of zeal!
Think of how he has loved you, and given himself for you! Do you know the power of that love? Let it be like a mighty rushing wind to your soul to sweep away the clouds and fog of worldliness, and clear away the mists of sin which clings so closely… Love should give wings to feet that serve and strength to arms that labor…
If you want to talk, let me know, I’m your pastor! I’m working to find times to meet with / visit all the members and regular attendees of CPC so that I can help you to grow in Christlikeness. So if you hear from me, you’re not in trouble – in fact, you are loved!
From the New City Catechism – Question 2: What is God?
God is the creator and sustainer of everyone and everything. He is eternal, infinite, and unchangeable in his power and perfection, goodness and glory, wisdom, justice, and truth. Nothing happens except through him and by his will. (Cf. Ps. 86:8-10, 15)
Please continue to pray for the nations of the US/Iran and Israel/Gaza and Ukraine/Russia and Sudan. May God grant peace and bring an end to these wars.
Further announcements can be found in the weekly spotlight. And other church wide announcements can be found in our weekly bulletin.
For Prayer:
1. From Bishop J.C. Ryle – “To be prayerless is to be Christless, Godless, and in the high road to destruction…It will always be found that when prayers are few, grace, strength, peace, and hope are small.” Please join our Wednesday night prayer meeting (7:45 – 9:00 pm) even if you can’t participate the whole time.
