More Than a Bright Week
“Jesus spoke to them again: ‘I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows me will never walk in the darkness but will have the light of life.” —John 8:12
This week, our church has been filled with bright colors, joyful music, energetic movements, smiling faces, and the enthusiastic voices of children. From the moment they gathered for worship until they moved through Bible lessons, crafts, games, missions, and snacks, the building seemed to come alive. Lifeway’s Illumination Station has certainly given us a bright and colorful Vacation Bible School—but this week has been about much more than decorations and activities.
At the heart of Illumination Station is an important question Jesus once asked His disciples: “Who do you say that I am?” (Matthew 16:15).
Many people have heard the name of Jesus. Some consider Him a wise teacher, a good man, or an important person from long ago. But throughout VBS, our children have been discovering what the Bible reveals about who Jesus truly is. He is God’s promised Son, God’s perfect Son, the powerful and proven Son of God, and God’s plan for our forgiveness.
I also had the joy of participating in VBS by leading the snack station. At first glance, preparing and serving snacks may seem less significant than teaching a Bible lesson or leading worship. Yet even thru snack we can reinforce the day’s message, sharing missionary stories, and creating a welcoming place for conversation, and remind children that they are known and cared for. Watching the children enjoy their snacks, interact with one another, and respond to what they had learned helped me appreciate how every part of VBS can contribute to sharing the love of Christ.
The pictures from this week capture more than a large gathering of children and volunteers. We see hands raised in worship, young people leading from the stage, children singing together, teachers sharing God’s Word, and volunteers serving wherever they are needed. Each person has helped shine a light on the truth of Jesus.
This is a beautiful picture of the church working together. Some volunteers taught Bible lessons or led music. Others prepared crafts and snacks, organized games, decorated rooms, managed technology, welcomed families, took photographs, maintained safety, or quietly cleaned up afterward. Every role mattered. Through their combined service, children experienced not only the message of Christ’s love but also a living demonstration of that love.
Soon, the songs will grow quiet, the colorful decorations will be taken down, and our rooms will return to their usual appearance. Yet our prayer is that the light received this week will continue to shine. May the children remember more than the fun they had. May they remember who Jesus is, what He has done for them, and that He invites them to follow Him.
Let us continue praying for every child and family we encountered this week. May we, too, follow Jesus faithfully and carry His light into our homes, schools, workplaces, and communities.
