“They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people.”    —Acts 2:46–47

Last Sunday, CrossPoint Community Ministry gathered for a potluck lunch after worship. The tables were filled with dishes lovingly prepared and brought by different families. People sat down to eat, conversations continued beyond the usual Sunday greetings, and younger and older generations shared the same room and the same food. It was a simple gathering, but simple gatherings can carry deep spiritual meaning.

Our lives are often crowded with responsibilities. Even at church, we may move quickly from worship to Sunday school, meetings, rehearsals, or the next item on our schedules. A shared meal gives us permission to pause. We stop working, sit down, receive what others have prepared, and enjoy the people God has placed around us.

This, too, is a form of rest.

When Jesus’ disciples returned from ministry, He told them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest” (Mark 6:31). Rest does not always mean being alone or doing nothing. Sometimes God refreshes us through an unhurried conversation, a familiar dish, a new friendship, or laughter around a table. We may arrive tired but leave encouraged because someone listened, remembered our name, or simply sat beside us.

The early church understood the importance of such fellowship. Acts tells us that believers worshiped together and also broke bread together “with glad and sincere hearts.” Their fellowship was not merely an inward-looking social activity. As they praised God, shared life, and cared for one another, they enjoyed the favor of those around them—and the Lord added to their number.

This reminds us that fellowship and outreach are not opposites. A church learns to welcome strangers by first learning to welcome one another. Around a table, newcomers become acquaintances, acquaintances become friends, and friends gradually become family. Outreach may begin with preaching to a crowd, but it can also begin with a simple invitation: “Would you like to sit with us?”

A gathering does not have to be large to be meaningful. What matters is whether those who come find genuine warmth, room to breathe, and room at the table. Yet we must also be careful that our fellowship does not become a closed circle. The joy we share should make us more willing to notice visitors, invite neighbors, approach someone sitting alone, and make room for those who have not yet found a place to belong.

Thank you to everyone who prepared food, organized the lunch, helped with setup and cleanup, or simply stayed to share in the fellowship. May our tables always have room—room for weary people to find rest, room for relationships to grow, and room for strangers to be welcomed with the love of Christ.
