Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
This morning, I was reminded of the incredible nature of our God. God gives, seeks, protects and provides. For example, I was reading in Ps. 84 and the psalmist declares: “For the Lord is a sun and a shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor. No good thing does he withhold from those who walk uprightly. O Lord of hosts, blessed is the one who trusts in you!”
Then I read in Ezekiel 34. There, God calls out the “shepherds” of Israel who were feeding on the sheep – leaders taking advantage of the poor and needy. God expels them from their role and takes on the role to seek the lost, bring back the strayed, bind up the injured, strengthen the weak. He also destroys the fat and the strong (who became so through their injustice).
Then I read in 1 Kings 3. God promises to give Solomon wisdom, and honor, and wealth and long life, as long as Solomon walks in the way of the Lord. But it is God who initiates, God who bestows honor, God who provides wisdom.
At the beginning of the month of October, may you delight in who God is: the One who does not withhold any good thing, but who seeks the lost, brings back the strayed, binds up the injured, strengthens the weak, takes initiative, bestows honor, blessing, and life. May God work in and through you so that you join him in the work he is doing around and through you!
