Members of the English Congregation,

“First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgiving be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” – Paul, 1 Timothy 2:1-4

The events of this past week call us not to worry or fear, but to prayer. We need to seek God’s mercy and grace for our nation’s leaders. Pray that those in leadership would do what they are in the position to do, to serve the people of our nation, and not serve their own interests. Pray that we would be able to lead a peaceful and quiet life – not one where we insist that our party won or that “such-and-such” is or is not our president. The quiet life is not a silent life. We are still to be witnesses. We are to live godly and dignified lives so that we can have credibility as witnesses.

Why do I talk about witnessing? It’s because God desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. The truth is that we need Jesus. We need his presence and grace and love. We need the Holy Spirit to fill us, not so that we can have power, but so that we can use the power we have to serve others. We need God’s grace to pray for those in authority, even when we disagree with them or their policies. Will you commit, with me, to praying for “all who are in high positions”?
