Dearly Beloved,

What are you preparing for? Chinese New Year is right around the corner. Normally, people gather together to celebrate and enjoy time with family and friends. In the time of COVID-19, this year will be much different. But maybe you’re not preparing for a holiday, you’re preparing for another event – like finding a job, or going to visit family, or welcoming a child into the world. No matter what we are preparing for, we take steps and action to prepare for those things.

In Mark 14, there are many different people preparing for different things. This Sunday, I’ll be preaching from Mark 14:1-11. I’ve included a picture of the event by Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld, for your consideration and appreciation. I’m really excited to share God’s Word with you. I’ll be talking about one characteristic of a radical disciple. But there is so much in these verses that we won’t have time to dig deep and mine the depths of God’s word. So, here’s a little homework. Compare and contrast Mark 14:3-9 with Mark 14:12-26. What are the similarities? Are there variations on a theme? What are the differences? What are the results? I’ll give you a head start: Both are stories of preparation which lead to remembrance. What else will you find as you take time to spend with God in his word?
