Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Is the topic of God’s judgement offensive to you? This morning, in our family devotions, we talked about what will happen to those who are not united to Christ by faith. We talked to our kids about what it means to be cast out from the favorable, gracious presence of God. And I found myself wondering what makes this doctrine seemingly unpalatable.

A conversation I had with a neighbor a number of years ago showed this doctrine to be distasteful. I had asked him what would be the result, according to his belief system, if I was wrong about what I believe. I also told him that, according to Christianity, if people reject Jesus, they will be punished in hell. This information wasn’t well received.

Brothers and sisters, we need a God who will bring justice. What do we do when we are faced with unfair, unfounded accusations? How do we respond when others try to scam us? What do we do with feelings of anger against injustice? Tonight in Bible Study and also on Sunday, we’ll be talking about Psalm 35. We will see that we need a God of Justice. We also can see that we need God to be our deliverer or else we will face his judgment. We don’t turn to him only to escape punishment. We turn to him because he has delivered, is delivering and will deliver us.
