Where Mercy Takes Root
“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” —Galatians 6:9
At The Root Cellar this week, our short-term mission team has been doing many kinds of “good.” Some were visible and practical: serving approximately eighty children at the Super Summer Camp, teaching English to immigrants, assisting with cooking and financial classes, leading crafts and games, cleaning the facility, and keeping energetic children safe. Other acts were quieter: listening to someone’s story, praying for a new friend, helping children reconcile after a disagreement, or simply showing patience and kindness.
On their first day, the team walked through the Lewiston neighborhood to observe, listen, and pray. They learned about the immigrant community and considered how they might care for their neighbors with the love of Christ. In the following days, those neighbors began to acquire names, faces, and personal stories.
One of them was Eduardo, a geology professor from Angola who crossed the ocean to begin his life again in America. He is studying English and hopes to find work in his profession. The team prayed for Eduardo and Hugueeth, another immigrant from Angola, as they learn English and seek employment. Pastor CJ also shared the gospel with a local woman who was trying to turn away from poor choices and begin anew. We do not yet know how God will answer those prayers or how these conversations may shape their lives.
Seeds were also being planted among the children. The campers have been memorizing Ephesians 5:1–14 throughout the summer. Our team was impressed by their commitment to learning such a substantial passage. They also saw children learning to repair relationships after conflicts. Perhaps these lessons and verses will remain in their hearts long after camp ends.
The team’s devotional theme from Micah 6:8—acting justly, loving mercy, and walking humbly with God—helped them understand that Christian service is more than completing projects. It means seeing people, hearing their stories, honoring their dignity, and extending the mercy we have first received from God.
Galatians reminds us that doing good can become tiring. Our team has needed prayer for sleep, health, energy, wisdom, and patience. Yet God does not ask us to produce the harvest ourselves.
